The legally protected ones
In Australia, "psychologist" is a protected title under national law: only practitioners registered with AHPRA (the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) can use it. Registration requires accredited university training, supervised practice and ongoing professional standards. "Psychiatrist" goes further still: a medical doctor with specialist mental health training, able to prescribe medication. If you see either title, a regulator stands behind it.
The unprotected ones
"Counsellor", "psychotherapist" and "therapist" are not protected titles: legally, anyone in Australia can use them. That does not make the people using them unqualified: many hold serious degrees, long experience and memberships of voluntary professional bodies (such as ACA or PACFA). It means the title alone tells you nothing, so the substance has to be shown. Ask any counsellor what they hold, where it was earned, and how long they have practised: good ones answer without flinching.
What regulation covers, and what it does not
- AHPRA regulates registered individuals: titles, standards, complaints about registered practitioners.
- Unregistered practitioners still answer to state codes of conduct for health workers, enforced by bodies like the NSW Health Care Complaints Commission.
- Online therapy platforms as a category have no mandatory regulator of their own, which is why a platform's published standards matter so much.
How to choose
If you may need diagnosis, formal assessment, medication or Medicare rebates, you want the registered pathway: a GP, and a psychologist or psychiatrist. If what you need is structured support: working through stress, grief, relationships, patterns: experienced counsellors do exactly that work, typically at lower prices.
