Money and access

The sessions ran out. The year did not.

Medicare's cap lands in the exact week you still need support. Here is the full option list, honestly priced.

Why this happens mid-year

Medicare subsidises up to ten psychological sessions a calendar year. Anyone attending fortnightly hits the cap in about five months; weekly attendance burns it by autumn. The counter resets in January, which is cold comfort in August.

Your options, priced

  • Continue at full fee: $200 to $280 a session with your current practitioner. Continuity has genuine value; if the budget stretches for the weeks you need, it is the simplest path.
  • Ask about a reduced rate: sliding-scale spots exist and practitioners are asked about them all the time. The worst answer is no.
  • Community options: university training clinics and community health centres run reduced-fee services, usually with wait lists.
  • Free phone and online support: Lifeline (13 11 14), Beyond Blue (1300 224 636), MensLine (1300 78 99 78): free, trained, and useful between sessions, not just in crisis.
  • Pay-per-session platforms: InnerHub sessions are $59.90 flat with experienced overseas practitioners who are not AHPRA-registered: a different model, explained plainly on Our Standards. For many capped-out people the real comparison is $59.90 versus stopping.

A cleaner way to think about it

The cap is a budget boundary, not a clinical one: nobody decided ten sessions is what a hard year needs. If support was working, the goal is continuity in a form you can sustain. Price the options, keep the cadence, and let January's reset be a bonus rather than a rescue.

Prices reflect typical published figures as at August 2026 and change over time. This article is general information, not financial, clinical or medical advice. InnerHub is not a crisis service: in an emergency call 000, or Lifeline on 13 11 14.
