Grief and loss · Therapy

Grief has no timetable.

There is no right way to do this and no date it should be done by. But you do not have to carry it in silence, and you can talk to someone this week.

A gentle note before anything else: InnerHub is not a crisis service. If you are in immediate danger call 000, and for support any time of day or night, Lifeline is 13 11 14. More numbers on crisis support.

What this is

Grief and loss, in real life

Loss rearranges everything: a person, a marriage, a health, a future you had already furnished. The people around you are kind for a few weeks, then the world resumes, and you are left holding something that has not finished with you.

Grief therapy is not about moving on or letting go on schedule. It is a place where the loss can take up the whole hour, with someone experienced enough not to flinch, tidy it up, or rush you through it.

Hands cradling a warm mug on a quiet evening

Sound familiar?

How it tends to show up

  • Waves that arrive without warning, months or years later
  • Functioning fine outside, hollow at home
  • Anger, guilt and relief tangled together, none of them speakable
  • Losing the person you were in the role you lost
  • Anniversaries and ordinary Tuesdays hitting equally hard
  • The people around you quietly expecting you to be done

How therapy helps

What the work actually looks like

With a practitioner experienced in grief and loss, the hour is shaped around what your loss actually needs:

  • Room to say the unsayable parts out loud, without managing anyone's reaction
  • Working with the waves rather than bracing against them
  • Carrying the loss and rebuilding a life around it, at your pace
  • Support through the days you already know will be hard

Fair questions

Asked before booking

It has been years. Is it too late to talk to someone?

No. Grief does not expire, and neither does support for it. Years-old loss walking into a first session is one of the most common stories in therapy.

My loss is not a death. Does it still count?

Yes. Divorce, estrangement, illness, a future that fell through: grief follows loss of every kind, and it deserves the same room.

What if I cry the whole session?

Then that is what the session was for. You will not be the first or the hundredth, and your therapist's job is to sit with you in it, not to hurry you out of it.

Therapy is support, not clinical treatment: our practitioners do not diagnose or prescribe, and when what you need sits beyond therapy, their job is to say so and point you to it. Who they are and how we hold them to that is on Our Standards, and if you need urgent help right now, the numbers on crisis support are free and answer around the clock.
